Texas Tech and Arkansas played their last game as Southwest Conference foes on Nov. 9, 1991. Arkansas moved to the Southeastern Conference the next season, and the Red Raiders and Razorbacks have not met on the gridiron since.
Dirk West disapproved of Arkansas’ jumping the SWC ship and took shots at the Hogs in several cartoons, including this one that was printed on the game day of that final Tech-Arkansas contest.
Dirk hit the nail on the head here in more ways than one. First, the Red Raiders spanked Arkansas 38-21 later that day.
Second, while Arkansas wasn’t dead last in the SEC as Uncle Upright suggested, it took the Hogs four years to have a winning season in the SEC. They were 3-7-1 in 1992, 5-5-1 in 1993 and 4-7 in 1994 before posting an 8-5 record in 1995.
In the Razorbacks’ 16 SEC seasons, they have had winning records in only eight of them.
During those same 16 years, Tech has had 13 winning seasons.
Dirk was certain Texas and Texas A&M would have an easy time getting invitations to join another conference. But the future wasn’t so clear regarding other SWC teams, as he noted in the “For Rent” box.
The last SWC football season was in 1995. In 1996, Rice, SMU and TCU had joined the Western Athletic Conference, Houston was in Conference USA and the other four teams were playing in the Big 12.
