Mae Murfee was a pioneer Lubbock teacher and prominent civic and church leader. She first taught in Lubbock County in the Slide community in 1905 and became the first woman principal of a Lubbock junior high school in 1914.
With her own books, she started the city's first high school library in 1916.
Murfee served as head of the Lubbock High School history and government department for many years. She also helped in bringing Texas Tech to Lubbock in 1925. Murfee also served as county superintendent of education from 1928 to 1936.
